Teddy Liddell Addresses the Crisis of Corruption in New Jersey Politics

Teddy Liddell, a candidate for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s 1st District, is calling for tougher anti-corruption laws in response to high-profile corruption cases involving George Norcross III and Senator Robert Menendez. He proposes reforms aimed at increasing transparency, strengthening bribery laws, and modernizing political ethics regulations to restore public trust and ensure responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

(Laurel Springs, Camden County, NJ – September 20, 2024) – Teddy Liddell, candidate for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s 1st Congressional District, addresses the vast crisis of corruption that is endemic in politics within New Jersey and offers his proposal for tougher political Anti-Corruption Laws. “Corruption is one of the major reasons why our taxes are so high and government is seen by so many of our citizens as unresponsive. Furthermore, it is an affront to law and order and diminishes our public trust,” said Teddy Liddell.

On June 17, 2024, the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey charged George Norcross III and his
associates in a 111 page, 13 count indictment. The Attorney General alleged that individuals of this “Norcross Enterprise” named in the indictment allegedly “used their political influence” to gain tax incentive credits worth millions of New Jersey tax payer dollars to the detriment of the City of Camden. Among the allegations are Racketeering Conspiracy – First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Theft by Extortion, Criminal Coercion, Financial Facilitation of Criminal Activity, Misconduct by Corporate Official, and Official Misconduct – First Degree.

Less than a month later, on July 16, 2024, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) was reportedly convicted on 16 counts – including bribery, extortion, honest services wire fraud, conspiracy, public official acting as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice – for his role in a years-long bribery scheme.

“Justice has finally come knocking on the door, and no one is above the law – including politicians and
powerbrokers alike. These are very serious and shocking allegations. Over the years, a number of studies and reports by countless universities and newspapers have listed New Jersey among the top 5 most corrupt states in the United States. As citizens of New Jersey, we cannot afford to ignore this. Anti-corruption laws importantly serve to increase government transparency and accountability. Moreover, these laws protect our citizens – and their tax dollars – from potential wrongdoing such as conflicts of interest, no-bid contracts, “no-show” jobs for friends and family, kickbacks, etc.,” said Teddy Liddell.

New Jersey’s 1st Congressional District covers all 36 municipalities in Camden County, the municipalities of Maple Shade Township and Palmyra in Burlington County, and the municipalities of Deptford Township, East Greenwich Township, Glassboro, Mantua, Monroe Township, National Park, Paulsboro, Pitman, Washington Township, Wenonah, West Deptford, Westville, Woodbury Heights, and Woodbury in Gloucester County. Democrat Incumbent Donald Norcross is currently the representative for this district and seeking re-election. Norcross has served 5 consecutive terms, for ten years since November 12, 2014. United States is divided into 435 Congressional Districts, each with a population of about 710,000 people. Each district elects a congressman or congresswoman for a two-year term.

“Once elected, I will introduce sweeping new Anti-Corruption legislation on the Floor of the House of
Representatives. Such legislation will make the passage of certain baseline Anti-Corruption Laws at the State level a prerequisite before a State can receive conditional Federal aid. I will focus on the following:

  • Supporting the bribery laws and prohibitions under the proposed Gifts for Officials, Legislators, and Delegates (GOLD) Standard Act to strengthen the federal bribery law,
  • Overhauling outdated lobbying and political ethics laws and regulations,
  • Dramatically increasing transparency in political contributions, and
  • Modernizing outdated conflict-of-interest and bid-rigging laws.”

Liddell is a West Point graduate, former U.S. Army Captain, and attorney. With platform initiatives focused on establishing economic affordability, minimizing government overreach, and empowering law, order, and justice, Liddell also firmly believes in securing the Southern border, and providing for our national defense – together, securing liberty and freedom.

Teddy Liddell, who describes himself as a candidate for change to bring new energy and new leadership in South Jersey, emphasized the need for integrity in politics and government. “Having these new laws will ensure that our tax dollars are well spent, well managed, and well conserved – and that our citizens are well served. It’s time we turn the page from corruption. The people of New Jersey deserve much better,” Teddy Liddell said.
